Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary

Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary 1

In Cambodia’s northern reaches, not far away from the Thai frontier, the Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary shelters a series of lowland forests, and a rich birdlife. Initially preserved to protect the near-extinct Grey Ox or kouprey, a bovine species peculiar to Southeast Asia, this sanctuary soon became one of the last few homes of Cambodia’s national bird, the Giant Ibis. At the heart of the lush, thriving wilds of this phenomenal park sits the village of Tmatboey. This conservation area, in collaboration with the country’s wildlife conservation society, has strived over the years to nurture and protect the Giant Ibis, and other indigenous bird populations within the park. Besides the national bird, that is at the core of Cambodia’s wildlife program, this bird-watching haven is also home to several other species like the White-browed Fantail and the Indochinese Bushlark.
